US House of Representatives to work with Sri Lanka Parliament

 

Speaker Karu Jayasuriya, on behalf on the Sri Lanka Parliament and Peter J. Roskam on behalf of the House Democracy Partnership, on Wednesday signed a agreement to strengthen the partnership between the two legislatures.

The House Democracy Partnership (HDP) is a twenty-member commission of the U.S. House of Representatives that works directly with partner countries around the world, to support the development of effective, independent, and responsive legislative institutions.

The agreement between the U.S. House of Representatives Commission and the Sri Lanka Parliament will facilitate the exchange of information on the legislative systems of each country, enable the sharing of knowledge, offer consultations on effective legislative management and assistance with training.

Congresswomen Diane Black and Dina Titus who were present during the signing expressed interest in working with Sri Lankan women parliamentarians.

The Sri Lanka parliamentary delegation was led by the Speaker and included Deputy Minister of Power and Renewable Energy Ajith P. Perera, Deputy Minister of Parliament Reform and Mass Media Karunaratne Paranavithane, State Minister of City Planning and Water Supply Dr. Sudarshini Fernandopulle and Secretary General of Parliament Dhammika Dasanayake.
