HC Judge Ilanchelian gives evidence into his Jaffna shooting bid

Vavuniya High Court Judge Manikkavasagar Ilanchelian arrived at the Jaffna High Court under tight security to provide main evidence in a case pending in the Jaffna High Court regarding the attempted murder of the Vavuniya High Court Judge.

On July 22, 2017, Manikkavasagar Ilanchelian, who was the Jaffna High Court Judge at that time, was going to his official residence in his car when a person shot the judge. Police Sergeant Hemachandra who was providing security to the judge was shot and killed in the firing.

A resident of the Chilaw area, who was involved in the murder of the Sergeant,

was later arrested by the police along with the pistol. Judge Ilanchelian, who is currently serving as the Vavuniya High Court Judge, was present to give evidence in connection with the case being heard in the Jaffna High Court.

While testifying here, the High Court judge stated that the shooting took place near the Nallur temple in Jaffna. Judge Manikkavasagar, who expressed regret that the criminals were able to use the temple premises to carry out the shooting, explained for about an hour how the shooting occurred that day.
