Judge assaulted by SI brother-in-law, wife dies of heart attack

The wife of a District Judge working in the Southern province has died of a heart attack after being in a state of shock following an attack on her husband by her brother, a Police Sub-Inspector due to a dispute over a cat.

A Sub-Inspector working at the Kalutara South Police Station was arrested by the Akmeemana Police and released on bail after he was produced before the Court in connection with the assault on the District Judge.

According to a complaint made to Police regarding this assault, Akmeemana Police said that the wife of the District Judge, who was in a state of shock during the investigation, died of a heart attack.

Police also mentioned that the district judge is married to the suspect Sub-Inspector’s sister.

This district judge along with his wife had gone to the house in Galle where his wife’s mother resides for the New Year on April 13. They also had taken their pet cat with them.

After celebrating the year, they had prepared to return back home on April 14 night time. But they had not been able to find their pet cat in the house. Since the cat was not at home at that time, the judge, his wife and the relatives had begun searching for the cat.

Police say that during the search for the cat an arguement had started between the judge and his brother-in-law, the Sub-Inspector and the SI had subsequently had slapped the Judge.

The District Judge had informed the Akmeemana Police and had lodged a complaint. According to that, a Police team including an Inspector had gone to the location and during questioning, the judge’s wife who was in a state of shock had complained of a chest pain. After recording the complaint, steps had been taken by Police to admit her to the Galle Karapitiya Hospital. A senior Police officer said the doctors had admitted her to the intensive care unit saying she had suffered a heart attack and later had died while receiving treatment. The officer also said that she is 45 years.
