On April 26 at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA), an attempt by two women to take a 17-year-old Tamil boy to UK by preparing fake documents based on the information of a Sri Lankan woman and her son already living there, was foiled when officers of the Border Investigation Unit of the Department of Immigration and Emigration arrested them.

On April 26, at 01.30 pm, a woman resident of Mullaitivu, along with her teenage son and another woman, had arrived at the BIA to depart for London by SriLankan Airlines.

When they reached the SriLankan Airlines counter, the airline officials had suspected that the documents were not genuine and handed them over to the officers of the Department of Immigration and Emigration Border Investigation Unit at the airport.

It had then been confirmed that these documents were forged.

Then the Immigration Department officials had taken the boy aside and inquired about this matter, and he had disclosed all the information and told these officials that his real mother is currently waiting at the departure terminal of the BIA.

Accordingly, these officers, who acted immediately, searched for the woman and arrested her and interrogated her on this matter, during which she had stated that their family was suffering severe hardships due to the current economic situation in Sri Lanka, and therefore for the future welfare of the boy, she had tried to send him abroad in this manner.

Both of these women are residents of Mullaitivu and the officers of the Border Investigation Unit of the Department of Immigration and Emigration who arrested them have handed them over to the Criminal Investigation Department at the BIA for further investigation.

During these investigations, information had been revealed that a person living in UK had entered the information of his wife and son and prepared foreign passports and other documents and was involved in taking Sri Lankan male children to UK and running a human trafficking business.
