Two accused who were found guilty of killing a person with sharp knives at the Grandpass Junction in Colombo, 22 years ago, were yesterday sentenced to death by the Colombo High Court. Following a lengthy trial of 22 years, Colombo High Court Judge Amal Ranaraja observed that the prosecution has proved the allegations against the accused beyond reasonable doubt.
Considering the evidence produced during the trial, two accused were sentenced to death and another two accused who were indicted for the same allegations were acquitted and released from the case as there was insufficient evidence to prove the allegations against them.
The Attorney General had filed an indictment against four accused for killing Sinnaiyya Nadeshen using sharp knives following a personal dispute on August 5, 2002, at the Grandpass Junction in Colombo.
State Counsel Vishwa Wijesooriya appeared on behalf of the Attorney General while Police Sergeant P.K. Leelaratne appeared for the Pettah Police Station.
