Police launch special ops to combat rising crime in WP, SP

The Sri Lanka Police has taken steps to launch a new operation to combat organized crime.

This operation which will be conducted in the Western and Southern Provinces where the highest numbers of murders are taking place currently will be carried out under the direct supervision of Inspector General of Police (IGP) Deshabandu Tennakoon and the Commanding Officer of Police Special Task Force.

Accordingly, 20 armed police teams will carry out security operations in these areas and these teams will operate only on the orders of the IGP and the Commander of the Police Special Task Force.

The IGP expressed these views while participating in an event held with the aim of empowering community police units in the Kilinochchi and Mullaitivu districts.

The special operation will take place today (19) at 7.00 am at the Police Criminal Records Division, Colombo 7, with the participation of the IGP, Commanding Officer of STF, DIG of Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Director of Criminal Records Division, Director of Special Bureau and all the officers belonging to the 20 special police teams appointed to combat the underworld.

The official team send-off will take place at 8.45 am today at the Police Field Force Headquarters, Colombo 5, with all these officials and officers of the 20 police teams in attendance.

In the recent past, murders by members of underworld criminal gangs have seen a sharp and rapid increase in the Southern and Western Provinces.
