New fighter jets for Sri Lanka; to maintain territorial integrity

The proposal by President Maithripala Sirisena, in his capacity as the Defense Minister, to obtain expressions of interest from aircraft manufacturers to purchase new multirole fighter aircrafts and associated weapons, was approved by the Cabinet of Ministers.

At the weekly Cabinet press briefing at the Government Information Department this afternoon, Cabinet Spokesman and Parliamentary Reforms and Media Minister Gayantha Karunathilaka said the fighter aircrafts used by the Sri Lanka Air Force are aging and require upgrade.

He said it was important that Sri Lanka maintained security and territorial integrity and were prepared for unexpected threat.

Health Minister and Cabinet Spokesman Dr. Rajitha Senaratne said that only between eight and twelve aircrafts would be purchased.

“At the moment, only one Kafir aircraft – the remaining six aircrafts cannot be used. We have seven MIG aircrafts and eight other aircrafts but none of them can be used. The Government will consider all offers and select a suitable one,” he said.
