Education Minister Dr. Susil Premajayantha told Parliament yesterday that if the cases pending in Court are completed and development officers are allowed to be taken as teachers, the shortage of teachers will be solved.

The Minister said that the case filed against the recruitment of development officers as teachers has been pending in the Court for 14 months and due to this reason, it is not possible to recruit them as teachers to educate the children.

The Minister reminded that as a lawyer, he is ashamed that the Supreme Court has banned the examination for the recruitment of teachers for 14 months and that this examination was supposed to be held on March 25 last year. The Minister stated that the opportunity to hire 22,000 teachers has been lost due to the filing of a petition on fundamental rights by 33 development officers and that with the banning of an examination for 14 months.
