The Court of Appeal yesterday issued notice on former MP Hirunika Premachandra to appear before the Court on May 8 and give reasons why she should not be punished for Contempt of Court for criticizing an order given by the Mount Lavinia Magistrate regarding
an incident of assaulting a woman. A Bench comprising Court of Appeal judges Sobitha Rajakaruna and Dhammika Ganepola issued this order after considering the plaint filed by Hardy Jamaldeen, son of Uva Province Governor A.J.M.Muzzammil.
It has been mentioned in the plaint that former MP Hirunika Premachandra had criticised the granting of bail by the Mount Lavinia Magistrate to the son of Uva Province Governor over an assault on a woman on the International Women’s Day at a press conference convened by her.
The complainant cited that the respondent former MP Hirunika Premachandra had insulted the Court by criticising an order issued by the judiciary and urged an appropriate action against the offence.
