Iran’s President Ebrahim Raisi’s visit to Colombo is yet to be confirmed, Iran’s Ambassador Dr. Alireza Delkhosh told the Daily News yesterday (17).

Explaining further, the Envoy said, Sri Lanka President Ranil Wickremesinghe invited the Iran’s President to visit Colombo some three months ago, which the Iranian President readily accepted. “The date of arrival is yet to be fixed by both parties.”

As to the issues that prompted Iran to engage in a military operation against Israel, the Ambassador said, “In the late hours of April 13, the armed forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran carried out a series of military responses on Israeli military objectives, with dozens of missiles and drones. This action was in the exercise of Iran’s inherent right to self-defense, as outlined in Article 51 of the UN Charter, and in response to the Israeli regime’s recurring military aggressions, particularly, its armed attack on April 1 against Iranian diplomatic premises, in defiance of Article 2 (4) of the UN Charter. He said, following the Israel regime’s cowardly terrorist and armed attacks against the diplomatic premises of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Damascus, in a flagrant violation of international Law and UN Charter, the Islamic Republic of Iran, at first, notified the UN Security Council (UNSC) of Israel’s international wrongful acts, as well as of Iran’s inherent right, under international Law, to respond to such terrorist armed attacks (A/78/838-s/2024/281).

Next, Iran’s Foreign Minister, in a phone conversation with UN Secretary-General on April 2, discussed the situation, calling for appropriate action and strong condemnation from the international community and the UNSC for this horrific crime.
