Information from the Police Headquarters stated that 23 persons had died from road accidents between April 12-15 and 13 people died ion New Year’s Day alone.
These accidents took place in the Kahawatta, Nawalapitiya, Wariyapola, Kirindiwela, Mahiyanganaya, Pussellawa, Thanamalvila, Matara, Hali Ela, Ambantota and Pugoda Police divisions.
An accident in Pussellawa has left two individuals dead, including a child, and four others injured after a van plunged down a precipice. The deceased were a two-year-old boy and a 70-year-old individual. Four individuals sustained injuries in the accident and were rushed to hospital.
Meanwhile, two people were killed and two others injured in a car crash in the Hali-Ela area, Police said. Police said the victims belonged to the same family. The car veered off the road and crashed into a wayside tree.
A large number of accidents involved motorcycles and three-wheelers.
According to Police Media Spokesman DIG Nihal Thalduwa, drunk driving, high speed and reckless driving have led to these accidents.
Police request drivers and the motorcycle riders to drive carefully during the festive season in order to prevent accidents.
