A person who severely injured two police officers using a sword was shot dead by Mawanella Police during a raid at Padiyadora area in Ritigahamulla on Saturday night, it was reported.
According to the Police Media Spokesman, DIG Nihal Thalduwa, the incident has happened when a team of four officers of the Mawanella Police, following receipt of several telephone calls and complaints visited the Padiyadora area to arrest a father and a son who were intimidating the area residents with swords.
When the Police arrived at the location, the father who was hiding had suddenly attacked the Police officers with his sword causing severe cut injuries to two of the officers. In response, one of the other officers had opened fire at him and the 53-year-old suspect had succumbed to his injuries on admission to the hospital, Police said. The 24-year-old son had fled the scene when Police opened fire.
The injured officers have also been admitted to the Kegalle Hospital and are currently receiving treatment in hospital. It has been revealed that the deceased had been charged over illicit liquor selling and heroin smuggling on previous occasions. The 24-year-old son also has been identified as a person released on bail from the remand custody about a week ago, Police said. Police have taken two swords taken into custody from the scene of crime.
Mawanella Police are conducting investigations over the incident under the supervision of Mawanella Division ASP.
