Over 70,000 islandwide affected by adverse weather

According to the Disaster Management Centre (DMC), 71,320 people belonging to 18,898 families in many districts of the island have been affected by the adverse weather.

The DMC stated that the districts of Ratnapura, Kegalle, Colombo, Kalutara, Gampaha, Matara, Galle, Nuwara Eliya, Puttalam, Kurunegala, Jaffna and Batticaloa have been affected by heavy rain.

A total of 1,910 people belonging to 555 families affected by the disaster have been placed in 16 shelters.

Also, due to the adverse weather, 12 houses have been completely damaged and 1,004 houses have been partially damaged, the DMC said.

Meanwhile, considering the adverse weather, measures have been taken to close all public schools in the Galle and Matara districts yesterday (9) and today (10). Also, the second term examinations of those schools have been postponed indefinitely.

The Irrigation Department said that water is not overflowing from the BR5 flood protection embankment connected to the Nilwala Ganga. The Disaster Management Centre stated that the disaster situation in Matara and Galle districts is subsiding. The Meteorological Department said that the rain falling in those areas has also decreased. However, many areas of the Matara district which were flooded in recent days are still under water.

Accordingly, the areas of Akuressa, Athuraliya, Malimbada, Kamburupitiya and Thihagoda have been affected.

At present, 27,523 people belonging to 7,784 families have been affected by the floods in Matara district.

Even after the disaster has subsided, the DMC said that the crocodile risk should be dealt with very carefully.

The Irrigation Department said that the water level of the Gin Ganga is also subsiding.

Meanwhile, the National Building Research Organization (NBRO) said that landslide red notices were issued for the districts of Galle, Matara and Kalutara. The NBRO has also issued a notice to the people of several areas of the districts where the red notices have been issued to go to safe places.

According to the NBRO, landslide red notices were issued for Elpitiya, Nagoda, Yakkalamulla and Imaduwa in the Galle district and Ingiriya, Walallawita and Matugama in the Kalutara district and Pitabeddara, Akurassa and Hakmana in the Matara district.

The Met Department said scattered thundershowers would occur in the Northern, North Central, Eastern and Central Provinces and the Badulla district.
