New COPE Committee Chairman MP Rohitha Abeygunawardena said he will take legal action against NPP MP Vijitha Herath for his comments during a discussion with the IMF representatives that the current Chairman of COPE is a person who has allegations of corruption against him.

Speaking to journalists in Kalutara he said Vijitha Herath MP had said in a press conference on March 14 he had told IMF representatives that there are corruption and other allegations of misconduct against the current COPE chairman.

“As of now I have no case or accusation in any Court. I am planning to send a letter of demand to Vijitha Herath MP regarding this statement. If there is no proper response, I will initiate legal action,” he said.

Abeygunawardene also said accusing a person without any evidence was wrong. He said that the argument that the position of chairman of the COPE committee belongs to the Opposition is wrong. He said that the ruling party MPs have held this position on several occasions.
