Education Minister Dr. Susil Premajayantha told Parliament on Saturday that measures will be taken to fill the existing teacher vacancies before the end of the upcoming school holidays. The Minister also said that the recruitment of 25,000 graduate teachers has been delayed for nine months due to the Supreme Court’s Interim Order.

The Minister answering a question raised by MP Rohini Kumari Wijeratne said that it is expected to complete the recruitment before the end of the vacation and steps will be taken to provide a solution to the teacher imbalance that has been existing at the provincial level since the past.

The Minister emphasized that it is unfortunate that there is a imbalance of number of teachers in the same region and when considering Colombo district , there is a surplus of teachers in Colombo North and a shortage of teachers in Colombo South.

The Minister also stated that Provincial Education Ministers, Directors and other officials, and Trade Unions will convene for a two-day workshop and steps will be taken to find solutions to the problems in the education administration.
