The mother and father of a woman working in the Excise Department have been arrested by the Kotawila Police in connection with an illegal liquor trade. Police say that the couple has been arrested with illegal liquor on 20 previous occasions and even Court cases have been filed against them, a senior Police officer said.
The main suspect, the father of the woman who works in the Excise office, told Police officers, that fourteen cases have been filed against him by the Weligama Police, three cases by the Matara Police and three cases by the Kotawila Police.
Recently when the Police checked the suspect’s house, they found 20 bottles of moonshine in his house and 55,500 liters of goda in a shrub area near the house.The suspect’s wife was arrested by the Police along with equipment including gas cylinders and gas stoves, which were used to brew alcohol illegally. A senior Police officer said that the Police also arrested a person who assisted them in the production of alcohol.
