Merone sets up new Sri Lanka 100m record

Merone Wijesinghe 100 m new Sri Lanka record

At the ongoing Asian Junior Athletic Championship in Dubai, the Sri Lanka under-20 boys’ 4x100m relay team set a new national record. Their superb timing of 40.32 seconds secured them a spot in the relay final, surpassing the previous record of 40.37 seconds set in 2014. The team, comprised of K. Thamel, Induruwa Weeraratne, R.V. Vidushan, and Merone Wijesinghe, showcased exceptional performance.

In the 100m final, Sri Lanka boys’ team captain Marone Wijesinghe achieved a personal best of 10.54 seconds, securing fifth place. Coached by former national athlete Badra Gunawardena, Wijesinghe delivered his best performance yet. His timing of 10.54 seconds ranks as the third-best junior record in Sri Lanka, following Shehan Ambepitiya’s 10.43 seconds in 2008 and Himasha Eshan’s second-best time in 2012. Badra Gunawardena also went on this tour as a coach.

, Dr. Dhammika Senanayake, the Sri Lanka Sports Medical Unit Doctor, has been named the international representative of the Asian Junior Athletic Medical Board. This marks the first time a Sri Lankan doctor has held this esteemed position.
