A fully developed public sanitation system was opened at the Parliament premises on 22.04.2024 to facilitate the general public including persons with disabilities visiting the Parliament.

The 40-year-old sanitary system has been expanded and developed in order to improve the sanitation facilities as the public participation in the parliamentary committees as well as the school children visiting the parliament is subjected to daily increase. This has also been implemented as a pilot project to expand sanitary facilities especially for the convenience of persons with disabilities who visit the Parliament.

The Urban Development Authority and the Sri Lanka Navy have contributed to the construction of this project, which was implemented under the initiative of the Department of the Co-ordinating Engineer of Parliament. A special meeting was held under the patronage of Speaker Hon. Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena to express gratitude for the above contributors as well as to get ideas and suggestions regarding future projects

The Secretary General of the Parliament Ms. Kushani Rohanadeera, Assistant Secretary General Hansa Abeyratne, Co-ordinating Engineer of Parliament Mr. Lalit Adhikari, Heads of Departments and a group of officers from the Department of Co-ordinating Engineer and a group of Navy and Urban Development Authority officers who contributed to this project also participated in this event.
