Former President Maithripala Sirisena said the Sri Lanka Freedom Party faced more crises than the present one after the civic rights of former Prime Minister Sirimavo Bandaranaike were denied in the mid 80s.
“It is true that the SLFP is facing a crisis at present. But the Party faced a greater number of crises compared to the present one after former Prime Minister Sirimavo Bandaranaike’s civic rights were denied,” he said.
Addressing the 108th birth anniversary of world’s first woman Prime Minister Sirimavo Bandaranaike at the BMICH, the former President said her offspring cornered her by forming different parties.
“The former Prime Minister was cornered by her son and daughters by forming different parties after her civic rights were denied,” he said.
The former President added that a number of SLFP stalwarts including him stood by her at that point of time. He said that he was not involved in financial misappropriation after he became the president of the Party.
