The El Nino phenomenon is the main cause of the dry weather conditions occurring nationwide, Meteorology Department Director General Athula Karunanayake said yesterday. He told the media that rain can be expected from next Thursday until Saturday, but the heat will not decrease.
“In fact, the heat may further increase,” he added.
The Met Chief further said that the country can expect a slight increase in the rain for some areas including the Western, Sabaragamuwa, South, Central, and Uva Provinces from March 21 to 25, but added that these showers would not produce enough rainfall to alleviate the dry weather or the heat. Karunanayake further said that the analyses showed that the El Nino effect will last at least until April.
