The State Astrologers’ Committee at the media briefing yesterday.

The State Astrologers’ Committee has refuted claims of faulty auspicious times during the Sinhala and Tamil New Year and justified the declaration of auspicious times to perform Avurudu rituals at night.

The members of the State Astrologers’ Committee have requested the public to follow the auspicious times of the Sinhala and Tamil New Year 2024 stating that they have designated the accurate times to perform the rituals even though there may arise practical difficulties when observing them at night.

They stated this while participating in the press conference held on the confirmation of the accuracy of the 2024 Sinhala and Tamil New Year auspicious rituals which was held yesterday (18) at the Government Information Department in Narahenpita.

Committee member and renowned astrologer G.M. Gunapala said that the Sun’s transit occurs at 9.05 pm on April 13 and that the New Year rituals must be designated during the auspicious time within six hours and twenty-four minutes from 9.05 pm when the Sun’s transit occurs.

Gunapala said that the auspicious times were designated at night during the six hours and twenty-four minutes avoiding the raahu kalaya.

According to committee member A.K.U. Sarath Chandra, the majority of the State Astrologers’ Committee have approved the designated auspicious times and said that only five out of 42 members had wanted the designated traditional auspicious times changed to daytime.

Another astrologer of the committee, Ananda Seneviratne stated that this type of auspicious times falling at night comes only once in four years.
