Sri Lanka has been listed as the world’s second least miserable country based on the 2023 Mental State of the World Report that was released by Sapien Labs on March 4. Sri Lanka has been ranked as world’s second highest in Mental Health Quotient (MHQ) recording a score of 89.

The Dominican Republic leads the list while Tanzania, Panama and Malaysia come in third, fourth and fifth in the rankings.

Sri Lanka has the lowest of its population (14 percent) who are reported as feeling distressed or struggling, which is the lowest globally, based on Mental Well-being across countries’ official figures released in the report, which is a significant achievement.

According to the findings in the 2023 report, Sri Lanka has achieved the lowest percentage of its population reported as feeling distressed or struggling, against the backdrop of having  developed countries Brazil, South Africa and the United Kingdom recording the highest percentages of their population who are facing mental health challenges, going up to 35 percent.
