A 25-year-old suspect who had allegedly been assaulted severely in Jaffna has died from fatal injuries caused by the beating.
The victim has been identified as a 25-year-old man named Nagarasa Alex residing in Kalaivani Road in Sithankerny, Jaffna. The postmortem report has confirmed that the youth had died due to the heavy damages caused to his kidney as a result of the alleged assault. The youth was arrested along with another suspect by the Vaddukoddai Police on November 8 over a robbery.
The mother of the arrested 25-year-old youth had filed a complaint with the Human Rights Commission Office in Jaffna after which the two suspects had been produced before the Mallakam Magistrate’s Court on November 10.
However, due to objections raised by the Police in Court, the suspects had been kept in Police custody. After having the two suspects placed in the Jaffna prison, the victim had been admitted to the Jaffna Hospital by Prison officials where he succumbed to injuries on Monday (20).
Two Police officers attached to the Vaddukoddai Police in Jaffna have been transferred after the death of the youth from severe assault while in police custody.
