Scholar panel to read historic Dimbulagala stone inscriptions

Archaeology Department sources state that the work of reading the copies of insignias of the largest stone inscription found in the country recently discovered in Dimbulagala, Polonnaruwa is to be assigned to one of the most expert scholars of stone inscription reading in the country.

Accordingly, the reading of the stone inscription is scheduled to be done at the Archeology Department premises in Colombo on a future date with the participation of the relevant scholar and the expert panel and it is said that this will take sometime.

Sources also state that the script insignias obtained from the stone inscription in question have been copied and brought to the Department of Archeology in Colombo and the work of processing them before reading them will begin next week.

This step has been taken for the protection of the inscription. With the publicity of this inscription in various media, local and foreign tourists are coming to see it in large numbers and security has been provided to the area to protect it, Chief Prelate of the historical Dimbulagala Buddhist Monastery Ven.Dimbulagala Rahulankara Thera said.

Ven. Rahulalankara Thera said that the stone inscription which has been copied and completed by the officials of Polonnaruwa and Colombo Archeology Departments a few days ago will provide necessary facilities to view it for outsiders as soon as possible and that the archeological officers are working to explain the meaning of the inscription very quickly.

Ven. Rahulalankara Thera also mentioned that until the contents of the inscription are published, archaeologists have promised to publish a detailed report of the largest inscription within three weeks, and after that, the site should be protected and necessary facilities should be provided to visit it.
