Better quality health service stressed at Ruhuna Medicine Faculty academic session

The 12th Academic Session of the Ruhuna University Medicine Faculty – 2024 was held on Wednesday (8) under the patronage of Health Secretary Dr. Palitha Mahipala.

This study session was held at the T.W. Wickramanayake Auditorium of the Ruhuna University Medicine Faculty under the theme of ‘Health across the life cycle’.

Stakeholders including researchers, practitioners, academic fellows as well as students gather for this annual session which brings together medical undergraduates, academics, researchers and other healthcare professionals to present and discuss research findings, best practices and innovations in Sri Lanka’s medical field. Dr. Palitha Mahipala stressed the importance of strengthening primary health services, control of non-communicable diseases, which is a challenge for the health service. Based on the current health sector statistics, the Secretary further commended the progress made by the health sector in Sri Lanka. The health secretary further emphasised the issues regarding the upcoming challenges in healthcare and the measures to be taken to overcome those challenges and establish a better quality and stronger health service.

Presented research papers, case studies, clinical medicine, public health, basic sciences and applied sciences and shared their experience and knowledge in various aspects of health, the event was an opportunity to exchange ideas, learn from each other and improve the health system of the country. It also provides an opportunity to contribute to progress.

FMAS also promotes the research career of medical undergraduates as young researchers to enhance their knowledge and interest.

Research Publication Awards – 2023 (Research Publication Awards 2023) and Deans’ Awards and Dean’s List 2023 Certificates were also awarded. Ruhuna University Vice-Chancellor Senior Professor Sujeeva Amarasena, Medicine Faculty Senior Prof. Tilak Weeraratne, Colombo University Medicine Faculty Senior Prof. of Paediatrics Pujitha Wickramasinghe, Faculty of Medicine Academic Session – 2024 Co-Chairperson Prof. Nayana Liyanarachchi, Medical Degree Candidates, Scholars and researchers were present.
