National People’s Power (NPP) Leader, MP Anura Kumara Dissanayake stated that a future NPP government would likely change VAT and introduce a turnover tax to provide relief to the people.

Dissanayake mentioned this while joining a political discussion on a private TV channel recently.

The NPP leader, who commented on the tax system in the country, said that under the current tax collection process, the treasury is losing a lot of money. He mentioned that the new technology will be used to collect the tax revenue that is lost to the government, and to provide relief to the people, the effective tax percentages will be changed and if necessary, a method of taxing on the turnover will be implemented. “A lot of money due to the government as taxes does not come to the Treasury. It happens due to fraud and corruption. We are working to properly collect tax revenues that are lost to the Treasury. The income received by the government will be managed at the optimal level,” he said.

“Why do citizens pay taxes? Tax money paid by the citizens should be utilized with clear purpose. It seems this does not happen. But, people pay taxes” Dissanayake said and added that this system should be changed.
