Former National Medicines Regulatory Authority (NMRA) Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Dr. Vijith Gunasekara has been arrested by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) yesterday evening (8) over the controversial scandal of the alleged importation of substandard immunoglobulin.

Dr. Gunasekara was summoned to the CID yesterday to record a statement pertaining to the importation of a batch of substandard human intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) vials into Sri Lanka.

Accordingly, Dr. Gunasekara arrived at the CID yesterday to record a statement regarding the alleged importation of substandard immunoglobulin vials.

The former NMRA CEO Dr.Vijith Gunasekara was removed from his position last November 2023 due to having been accused of importing a batch of substandard human intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) into Sri Lanka after a probe was initially launched last year (2023) into the allegations that a pharmaceutical company had imported 22,500 vials of substandard immunoglobulin vaccines by generating forged documents with the assistance of two senior state officials from NMRA and the Health Ministry.

Dr.Gunasekara was removed from his position at NMRA after the alleged incident of the unlawful importing of a substandard batch of IVIG vials and was also accused of shredding a series of confidential and sensitive NMRA official documents.
