Power and Energy Minister Kanchana Wijesekera yesterday alleged that an organised group is attempting to sabotage the government by disconnecting power supply without prior notice and the Electricity Board is currently investigating the matter.

The Minister said this in replying to Samagi Jana Balawegaya MP Thushara Indunil Amarasena, regarding the disconnection of power to consumers who are unable to pay their electricity bills.

The Minister said that for 20 years, both power supply and disconnection have been conducted through the private sector and the trade unions are also accusing the government of giving this to private companies.

Commenting further, the Minister said, a target for issuing red bills has not been given and there is a system to disconnect electricity after issuing red bills. But some groups are trying to disconnect power supply by issuing red bills and necessary measures will be taken against the culprits,” he said.
