Sergeant arrested in Rs.10 Mn extortion case remanded

A Police sergeant has been arrested yesterday (2) by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in connection with the incident of soliciting Rs.10 million which took place in Colpetty area last week and has been remanded till May 15 by the Fort Magistrate’s Court.

The arrested suspect is a Police Sergeant attached to the Police Fraud Investigation Bureau. The suspect has been arrested based on an investigation conducted under DIG in charge of the CID, Rohan Premaratne, Police Media said.

According to Police, the suspect Police Sergeant has been arrested in the Kurunegala area. According to a complaint received, the Bribery or Corruption Allegations Investigation Commission had recently arrested

four suspects for impersonating CID officers and soliciting a bribe of Rs.10 million.

The suspected Sergeant has been arrested after the questioning of the four persons arrested by the Bribery or Corruption Allegations Investigation Commission.

The four suspects have visited and checked a house in Colpetty area stating there is an investigation against the complainant and had taken away Rs.12 million and US$ 3,500 belonging to the complainant. The suspects have re-visited the house later and had taken away the passport of the Indian national who was working in the house.

Afterwards, the complainant has been called by the suspects on the phone and had initially solicited a bribe of Rs. 40 million offering to assist the victim by refraining from taking action against him and returning the passport that was taken away. Later, the amount wanted as the bribe has been reduced to Rs.35 million and a bribe of Rs. 10 million has been demanded as the first installment. Meanwhile, out of the Rs. 12 million that had been taken away by the suspects, Police have recovered Rs.1.6 million.The Criminal Investigation Department is conducting further investigations into the incident jointly with the Bribery Commission.
