DPF MP Velu Kumar reported receiving death threats while attending a foundation stone-laying ceremony for a Ganadevi temple near Pussellawa town. He said the incident occurred amidst a demonstration by workers, organised by the Ceylon Workers Congress (CWC), demanding a wage increase to Rs. 1,700.
After the ceremony, Velu Kumar and others visited a nearby house for tea. Concurrently, the demonstration passed through Pussellawa town, where, according to local Police, a group confronted and threatened Velu Kumar.
Sellamuttu, a former member of the Gampola Uda Palatha Pradeshiya Sabha and Assistant General Secretary of the CWC, also attended the temple ceremony and was reportedly involved in the protest that followed. Velu Kumar claimed that Sellamuttu, his son, and several supporters later approached him threateningly.
Velu Kumar recounted that the group abused him verbally, made death threats, and attempted to physically assault him, while urging him to cease his advocacy against the CWC in Parliament.
When queried about the altercation, Sellamuttu said that Velu Kumar had intruded into the wage demonstration, triggering dissent among the participants.
