Police Media Spokesperson DIG Nihal Thalduwa announced that officers from all Police stations across the island have been put on alert to ensure the safety of the public and to assist with any issues that may arise during this Sinhala and Tamil New Year festive period.

The Police Media Spokesperson also urges the public to avoid engaging in activities that are culturally damaging, obscene, or insulting, particularly to women and children, or which offends any religion. He emphasized that the law will be strictly enforced against the organizers of such events and those who post them on social media. Furthermore, DIG Thalduwa stated that over 1,500 traffic police officers have been deployed in the Western Province alone to facilitate smooth travel for the public, with similar deployments in other provinces.

He also called on drivers to avoid driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs, noting that immediate roadblocks will be used to apprehend drunk drivers. The Spokesperson highlighted that 124,761 drunk drivers were arrested in 2023 and reminded everyone to adhere to traffic rules to prevent accidents.

Police advise the public to lock their vehicles when parked in towns, take care of their own vehicles, and avoid obstructing other vehicles.

For the convenience and safety of the public, special teams from the Police Traffic Department have been formed, and civilian Police officers have been deployed. If necessary, the Army will be called in to assist with special roadblocks. The public is urged to be vigilant with their valuables, including money and beware of counterfeit currency notes, especially when shopping for the Sinhala and Tamil New Year and visiting relatives and friends.

The Police Media Spokesperson also warns the public to be cautious of pickpockets in crowded areas, extortion by drug addicts, and sellers of outdated and unusable goods.

Business owners are encouraged to instal CCTV cameras for security and ensure they are functioning properly. If possible, private security guards should be employed for added protection. In conclusion, DIG Thalduwa reiterated that all Police stations on the island are on high alert to ensure the safety of the public and to provide assistance at any time. The Police are committed to performing their duties for a joyful and safe Sinhala and Tamil New Year celebration.
