The third king coconut cultivation village under the programme to modernise and diversify Sri Lanka’s agriculture industry was established at the Dampe, Homagama area, recently.
Under the guidance of Agriculture Minister Mahinda Amaraweera, it has been planned to carry out king coconut cultivation in this village in Dampe, focusing on the export market.
In addition to coconut water, there is a growing market demand for king coconut water and related products, especially in Middle Eastern countries, including the UAE and Western countries including the UK and the USA.
The Sri Lankan king coconut has a unique natural colour and taste.
About 50,000 king coconut plants have been planted so far, which can produce fruits in three to four years.
The Coconut Development Board has taken measures to provide free counselling, training and guidance for the selected farming families on methods such as preparation of pits, planting and application of fertilizers for the scientific cultivation of these plants.
Established according to a special request made by Transport, Highways and Mass Media Minister Dr. Bandula Gunawardhana as the Chairman of the Homagama Development Committee, steps have been taken to provide high-quality king coconut plants to the farming families of this village established in Dampe.
