Four boys drown, one rescued in Ma Oya

Five boys out of a group of schoolboys who went to bathe in the ‘Ma Oya’ river in the Walakumbura area in Alawwa have drowned with four of them found dead yesterday (27) evening. 

One of the drowned schoolboys out of the five has been rescued by the local residents at the time and has been admitted in the Kurunegala hospital for treatment, Police Media Spokesman DIG Nihal Thalduwa said.

Investigations have revealed that the five schoolboys who drowned while bathing in the river are Grade 9 students studying in a school in Polgahawela.Police investigations have revealed that the four deceased schoolboys are around 14 years and are residents of Alawwa and Polgahawela areas. According to villagers, the area of the river where these students drowned is about 30 feet deep.  The bodies of the four deceased children have been kept at the mortuary of the Polgahawela hospital to conduct post-mortem examinations. Alawwa police are conducting further investigations into the incident.
