In a significant stride towards enhancing bilateral defence relations, General Shavendra Silva WWV RWP RSP VSV USP ndc psc MPhil, the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) of Sri Lanka, embarked on an official visit to Kenya at the gracious invitation extended by General Francis Omondi Ogolla EGH EBS HSC ‘ndc’(K) ‘psc’(FRA), the Chief of the Defence Forces (CDF) of Kenya. This visit, conducted under the guidance of His Excellency the President Ranil Wickremesinghe, aimed to fortify Sri Lanka’s defence relations with the African Region.
Upon his arrival, General Shavendra Silva was warmly welcomed and conducted by the CDF and Commander of the Air Force to the Guard of honour in which the Kenyan Air Force extended full military honours, accompanied by the stirring melodies of the Air Force Band. The Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS), adhering to military customs, reviewed the parade while the distinguished colours of the Kenyan Air Force were on display. This reception not only signified the deep-rooted respect but also underscored the strong camaraderie shared between Sri Lanka and Kenya, laying a solid foundation for productive engagements during the visit.
During the welcoming ceremony, the counterpart of the CDS introduced Lieutenant General Charles Kahariri CBS ‘nwc'(USA)’psc'(K), the Vice Chief of Defence Force of Kenya, along with Commanders of Kenyan Army and Air Force, and senior military personnel, to the visiting delegation enhancing the atmosphere of mutual respect and collaboration. High Commissioner of Sri Lanka to Kenya His Excellency Veluppillai Kananathan graciously present at the event whilst welcoming the delegation headed by CDS.
The official visit of General Shavendra Silva to Kenya marks a significant milestone in strengthening defence ties between Sri Lanka and Kenya, paving the way for deeper cooperation and collaboration in the future.
