The 76th elephant calf was born at the Rambukkana Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage on March 20.
This baby elephant was born to 32-year-old she-elephant Shanthi and 19-year-old Pandu at the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage. The Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage was started on February 16, 1975, with five baby elephants according to the concept of P.B.G.Kalugalla, who was a minister at that time.
The first elephant born at the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage was Sukumaliya, born on July 5, 1984 to she-elephant Kumari.
The year in which the highest number of calves were born in the elephant orphanage was 2011 and that number was 15. The first twin elephants were born in the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage in August 2021.
Shanthi was seven months when she was handed over to the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage by the Wildlife Conservation Department in 1989.Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage attracts hundreds of thousands of local and foreign tourists each year.
