Sri Lanka will give preference towards importing more ‘electric vehicles’as and when the import ban of motor vehicles is removed, said Minister of Power and Energy, Kanchanan Wijesekera at the Cargills USAID EV charging project yesterday. This will result in more private sector companies investing in providing more charging stations/points and also invest in similar RE based infrastructure projects in the country as they will see an increase in demand for these RE based solutions. He also said that the government target/vision of achieving 70% power generation via RE in 2030 is on track.

President Ranil Wickremesinghe has also set a target for a decarburization goal in 2050 for Sri Lanka and we are confident that this can be achieved by 2024. While lauding both USAID and Cargills for launching the sixth electric vehicles (EVs) charging point yesterday at Cargills Food City in Bauddhaloka Mawatha he said that the government needs similar private companies to come up with projects of this nature. He also said that the rooftop solar scheme has made tremendous progress and in the last two years saw the highest number of installations in thehistory of Sri Lanka.
