United National Party Chairman and MP Vajira Abeywardena at a press conference held at the Presidential Media Centre held today (16) said Executive Presidency will continue and that incumbent President Ranil Wickremesinghe will be supported by a majority of the political parties at the next Presidential poll.
He reiterated that President Wickremesinghe during his nineteen months in office has been able to meet with a majority of the world’s leaders. He said that securing an appointment with most is not as easy as it sounds.
The UNP Chairman said that in Sri Lanka’s Parlimentary history about 125 leaders of political parties including Prime Ministers and Presidents have been assassinated or have met with untimely deaths and said that the safety of all political party leaders including that of President Wickremesinghe should be ensured.
