A person who tried to smuggle 14 gold biscuits worth Rs. 27 million to Sri Lanka from Bangkok, Thailand, was arrested by the Sri Lanka Customs on Sunday (27), Director of Customs Seevali Arukgoda said.

That morning, the luggage of all passengers exiting through the Customs has been checked by metal detectors, and the suspect declared to the Customs officials that he has a stock of gold with him after realizing he could not pass through Customs without detection.

The suspect is a 42-year-old resident of Wattala.

An import licence is required to import gold to Sri Lanka and the import can only be done by institutions authorized by the Central Bank of Sri Lanka.

Further investigations are being carried out by Sri Lanka Customs’ officials and the suspect has been remanded in custody after being presented to the Negombo Magistrate’s Court.
