Japanese aid to modernize agri sector using IT, smart farming

Agriculture Minister Mahinda Amaraweera said many farmers in our country have already started Smart agriculture programmes. “Private sector too is increasing their investments on smart agriculture and farming. The private sector has now realized that agriculture is a sector that can generate income, especially through new technology”.

Japan’s KBS – KEIO Business School agreed to introduce an Information Technology (IT) approach for agribusiness in Sri Lanka.

The delegation discussed the modernization of agriculture in Sri Lanka with a group of officials including Minister Mahinda Amaraweera at Agriculture Ministry on Wednesday (2). The delegation emphasized the need for an information technology approach especially to make the agricultural sector of the country a high income generating sector and to promote exports.

The delegation expressed their views regarding the areas that need to be further developed in order to export the vegetables, fruits and spices grown in this country to foreign markets under the theme of Smart Farming/Smart Agriculture.

Minister Amaraweera expressed his gratitude to the delegation for coming forward to further promote this situation.

Agriculture Ministry Secretary Gunadasa Samarasinghe and additional secretaries also participated in this event.
