Narcotics worth over Rs.200 Mn seized at Katunayake airport, seven arrested

Another stock worth around Rs.1 Bn found in Pettah shop

A group of officers from the Katunayake Airport Police Narcotics Division and the Police Narcotics Division arrested seven suspects along with a stock of powdered synthetic cannabis and synthetic amphetamine worth Rs.210 million on Wednesday (26) evening, a senior official said.

A consignment of these drugs was sent from Hong Kong to the Katunayake Airport via Dubai last Wednesday (26). When three persons came to Katunayake Airport’s air cargo section to take this parcel, this parcel was opened in front of them, there, a stock of synthetic cannabis worth about Rs.10 million weighing about 33 kg, and they were arrested.

Then, based on further information received from them, these officers seized about 100 kg of synthetic amphetamine powder worth about Rs.1 billion from a shop selling sound systems run by the head of this business in Pettah.

At the same time, the officers of the Police Anti-Narcotics Department had arrested three other people, including a Russian, who were involved in this business in the Battaramulla area.

The senior police officer added that information has been revealed that this synthetic drug powder is being used during parties in Colombo and other urban areas.

The three persons arrested at the Katunayake Airport were brought before the Negombo Magistrate’s Court, and the four persons arrested from Colombo were brought before the Pettah Magistrate’s Court, Colombo.
