Probe Police Officer who demanded Rs.130 Mn from Kudu Salindu

Salindu tells Magistrate of demand on his visit to CID

Fort Magistrate Thilina Gamage yesterday issued an order to the Inspector General of Police to immediately conduct an investigation and report to the Court regarding the Police officer who had demanded Rs.130 million from underworld gangster and drug trafficker Sellapperumage Salindu Gunaratne alias Kudu Salindu to balance investigations against him and prevent him from being handed over to other divisions when requested. Kudu Salindu, who is a powerful figure of the underworld involved in drug trafficking, is currently under detention and being interrogated under the protection of the Criminal Investigation Department after being deported from Madagascar. He had allegedly led members of underworld gangs in Sri Lanka, committed murders, engaged in drug trafficking and organized criminal acts obstructing national security and public peace.

In his order, the Magistrate has directed the Inspector General of Police to conduct preliminary investigations in this regard by the Police Special Investigation Division.

The magistrate made this order after considering the request made by Salindu Gunaratne alias Kudu Salindu in a confidential statement made to him when he visited the CID to observe three suspects including Kudu Salindu.

The Fort Magistrate Thilina Gamage on Wednesday afternoon observed the accused Salindu Gunaratne alias Kudu Salindu and Wickremaratne KasunChinthaka alias Harak Kata and Thevarasage Amila Susira Fernando alias Panadura Chutte alias Ting ting, who are being questioned by the Public Complaints Division of the Criminal Investigation Department.

After the Magistrate’s s observations, the second suspect Wickremaratne Kasun Chinthaka alias Harak Kata had been questioned by the Magistrate if he has anything to say and he had stated that he has nothing to say and the first suspect Sellapperumage Salindu Gunaratne alias Kudu Salindu has stated that he wanted to make a confidential statement.

He had stated that this Police Officer in the section where he is detained asked him for money on the May 31 and he informed the Officer-In-Charge in charge of the section where he is detained.

Sellapperumage Salindu Gunaratne alias Kudu Salindu had stated further that a Police Officer had recorded a statement from him about this. The Magistrate was informed about this by him, in a confidential statement.

After recording his confidential statement, the Magistrate recorded a statement from the Officer-In- Charge of the division where the suspect is being detained and this OIC had said in his statement that he had informed his superior police officer, the Assistant Superintendent of Police, regarding this.

The Magistrate had made notes after observing them, that the suspects are in good health and have been detained so that they get good ventilation.
