US NGOs donate medicines worth over US$ 53.3 mn

A stock of medicines worth US$ 53.3 million needed for cancer patients and children was handed over to Health Minister Keheliya Rambukwella by US Ambassador in Colombo Julie Chung yesterday.

This stock of medicine includes about 16 types of medicines for skin diseases among small children, arthritis and cancer. This stock of medicine was donated by US-based NGOs Medical Help International and Direct Relief.

Minister Rambukwella said that each and every country in the world has given a large amount of aid to the health sector of this country by proving their maximum generosity at this time of crisis. The Minister added that in areas such as medicines and medical equipment, increasing primary health care services , improving health information systems, ward units with facilities for sick children affected by cancer to stay together with their parents have been built with the help of various organizations and donors.

US Ambassador Chung said that US-based NGOs Medical Help International and Direct Relief continue to deliver much-needed medical supplies from Americans, inc diaspora communities, to the people of SL. “Today’s delivery of $53 Mn of meds for diabetics and cancer patients brings the total to $126 Mn in donations from these NGOs’ the ambassador tweeted.
