SLFP split on Nov 21 in 2014 - MR

Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday said that the Sri Lanka Freedom Party was divided on November 21 in 2014 when President Maithripala Sirisena who was the then General Secretary of the party left the party with a group of party members.

The Former President was addressing the representatives of local government bodies in the kandy district yesteray.

"Did I divide this party? Who handed over the party to an elephant?, he questioned.

Rajapaksa said he did not take any action when the President's son was involved in an incident on Pasikudah beach. No action was taken when a former President's daughter was caught in red handed with dud notes," he said.

Rajapaksa said his team is the pure Sri Lanka Freedom Party members who protected and promoted the Bandaranaike Policies.

"I was taken for a ride by President Sirisena twice. Party members intruct me not to fall into his prey again," he said. He said the members of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party who do not fall into the lap of the United National Party are with him.

Rajapaksa said President Maithripala Sirissena was in his Cabinet and held the post of Genenral Secretary for 11 years.

"Now I know why former Prime Minister Sirimavo Bandaranaike did not allow any person to hold the party's General Secretary post more than three years," he said.

He said some of those who were in his Cabinet are speaking as if they were not aware of what was happening in the country. They are also responsible for the decisions taken by the then Cabinet of Ministers.

Rajapaska said he handed over the party to incumbent President Sirisena after hundreds of party supporters were being harassed with the change of government on January 8.
