Prevalence of dengue in Kandy district is likely to increase – Dr. Krishantha Maasachchi

Kandy district community disease specialist Dr. Krishantha Maasachchi, said that according to entomological surveys, the prevalence of dengue in Kandy district is likely to increase in the oncoming month.

He said that the Kandy Municipal Council Health Medical Division has been included in the four dengue high risk zones designated by the National Dengue Control Unit and 15 dengue cases were identified in this division last April.

The doctor mentioned this while presenting data on the progress of dengue control at the coordination committee meeting held at the Kandy District Secretariat.

He also said that nine people have died of dengue this year, but no dengue death has been reported from the Kandy district so far. He emphasised that according to the data of the National Dengue Control Unit, by the end of April of this year, 1,547 dengue patients have received treatment in the hospital and 232 of them have been reported during the month of April.

He also said that according to the entomological surveys, there is a risk of dengue spreading increasing from the end of May to the end of June and that the local government agencies, divisional secretariat offices and all health medical officer divisions should be very vigilant in controlling the spread of the disease.

Central Province Governor Lawyer Lalith U. Gamage, Kandy District Coordinating Committee Chairman Gunathilaka Rajapaksa, Kandy District Secretary Chandana Tennakoon and others too, participated on this occasion.
