Tucked away amidst the green jungles of Sri Lanka’s Moneragala District lies a hidden natural wonder waiting to be discovered – the enchanting Ellewala Waterfalls. With its pristine beauty and tranquil ambiance, this hidden gem offers a retreat for adventurous travelers seeking an off-the-beaten-path experience.

Located just 7 kilometers from the bustling town of Wellawaya, Ellewala Waterfalls is situated in Meddekanda village, away from the hustle and bustle of city life.

Getting There

For those embarking on this adventure, the journey begins along the Ella – Wellawaya Road, approximately 27 kilometers from Ella.Don’t forget to stop for a lovely cup of plain tea with sweet helapa or pol roti at a little roadside boutique on your way!

Keep an eye out for the Alikota Ara reservoir, a picturesque stopover along the way. If you visit in the evening, you will see peacocks strutting on the bund. The reservoir’s gentle ripples reflect the vibrant hues of the sky above, as it becomes a canvas painted with the palette of nature.

Spanning an impressive 750 meters in length and towering 28 meters above the earth, the dam of Alikota Ara harnesses the waters of the Alikota Ara stream, a tributary of the Kirindi Oya.

This reservoir is a feat of engineering; emerging as a vital component of the Uma Oya Downstream Development Project initiated in 2014.

Travelers can follow the road until they reach the Rathmal Vehera Ancient Temple, where they will find a pathway leading to the hidden waterfall. Prepare for a rugged adventure as you navigate through narrow paths and rocky terrain, immersing yourself in the untamed beauty of the jungle. As you draw closer to the falls, the sound of rushing water grows louder, and leads to a mesmerizing waterfall.

A Natural Oasis

Standing at a modest height of 10 meters, the cascading waters create a soothing melody as they descend into the serene pool below.

However, a word of caution amidst the allure of this idyllic paradise – the undercurrents here are notorious for their strength, claiming the lives of many unsuspecting visitors. Even the most seasoned swimmers are advised to exercise caution and refrain from venturing too close to the deep end.

Recent incidents serve as a stark reminder of the dangers lurking beneath the surface, emphasizing the importance of safety precautions.

Jungle paths

As you traverse the jungle path, do not forget to keep a keen eye out for the inhabitants of this lush ecosystem – from curious insects to slithering reptiles, the jungle teems with life at every turn. Leeches, in particular, are a common sight, so be sure to come prepared with appropriate footwear and repellents to ward off these persistent pests.

For those planning a trip to Ella, a visit to Ellewala Waterfalls promises a tranquil escape from city life. The jungle echoes with the symphony of nature, a harmonious blend of chirping birds and rustling leaves. It is a sanctuary for wildlife, and a sanctuary for the soul.

While Ellewala Waterfalls may not be as renowned as some of Sri Lanka’s more famous attractions, its unspoiled beauty and serene ambiance make it a hidden gem waiting to be discovered.

But remember, as you bid farewell to Ellewala Waterfalls, take nothing but memories, leave nothing but footprints, and cherish the gift of nature’s splendor.
