The Foreign Affairs Ministry has directed the Sri Lankan Embassy in Sweden to investigate the alleged situation of Sri Lankans who have gone to work in Lithuania and find themselves in dire conditions and to submit a report immediately.
Some persons have alleged that they have been employed in pig pens, instead of employed as heavy vehicle drivers, as promised.
A senior spokesperson for the Foreign Affairs Ministry that, due to the absence of a Sri Lankan Embassy in Lithuania, the Sri Lankan Embassy in Sweden, which is concurrently accredited to Lithuania, has been tasked with looking into this matter and reporting back.
It has been reported that 106 Sri Lankans, who went to Lithuania to work as heavy vehicle drivers, have been assigned to work in pig pens. Last week, two individuals who had been sent to work in piggeries returned to Sri Lanka and spoke to the media at Katunayake Airport.The Foreign Affairs Ministry is paying close attention to this issue.
Despite their statements, the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment has emphasised the need to investigate the situation and stated that a decision will be made after receiving a report from the Sri Lankan Embassy in Sweden.
