Justice Minister Dr. Wijeyadasa Rajapakse told Parliament on Wednesday that the new incinerator built in Wanathawilluwa area to destroy the seized illegal narcotics produced before Courts will be opened next month.

Accordingly, 300 kg of narcotics produced before Courts will be destroyed on the first day.

The Minister said this while presenting the regulations under the Poisons, Opium and Dangerous Drugs Ordinance for approval in Parliament.

We wanted to identify a place to install this incinerator without causing any harm to the environment and the public. Therefore, a bare land belonging to the Wanathawilluwa Police was selected and the new incinerator was set up there at a cost of Rs.18 million.

The incineration will take place by monthly and the government no longer needs to wait for long periods before destroying them.

He said under the new regulations, the Magistrate can order the seized drugs to be destroyed after obtaining a sample of the stock and other required evidence before concluding the case.

“The drugs will be destroyed under a proper procedure with the participation of the Magistrate, the Police, the Attorney General’s Department and the Government Analyst’s Department,” he said.
