Adithya Weerasinghe, a rising star from the Anuradhapura Golf Academy, achieved a remarkable feat as he was honored with the title of Champion Junior Golfer of the Year 2023. The prestigious award was presented to him at the HSBC Future Lions ceremony held at the Royal Colombo Golf Club in Colombo.
Weerasinghe’s journey to success began through HSBC’s Future Lions Programme, which aims to nurture young talent in golf. Starting his golfing journey in late 2018, Adithya swiftly made a name for himself and proudly represented Sri Lanka at a tournament in Malaysia last year.
At just 14 years old, Weerasinghe, a student at Anuradhapura Central College, he first picked up a club at the age of 11, thanks to the support of the HSBC’s Future Lions Programme. The programme also recognized
other promising young golfers from clubs such as Nuwara Eliya Golf Club, Victoria Golf Resort Rajawella, Navy Aqua Golf Driving Range, and Royal Colombo Golf Club for their outstanding performances.
Ranil Pieris, the President of Sri Lanka Golf, expressed his commitment to promoting golf across the country, drawing parallels with the popularity of cricket. He emphasized the growing interest among youngsters in the sport and envisioned Sri Lanka becoming a formidable force in the South Asian region.
The ceremony, organized by the HSBC Future Lions Programme, saw several young golfers being awarded trophies and cash prizes for their achievements. Among the distinguished guests were Ranil Pieris, Head of
Junior Subcommittee Ms. Niloo Jayathilake, HSBC CEO for Sri Lanka and Maldives Mark Surgenor, and Head of Communications and Brand for Sri Lanka and Maldives Tharanga Gunasekara. Their collective efforts reflect a significant investment in promoting golf and nurturing talent in the country.
