Monk fined for brewing alcohol inside temple

A monk who was involved in brewing alcohol using the fruits given as alms inside the temple premises has been arrested by the Imaduwa Police.

The arrested monk has been produced before the Galle Magistrate’s Court on Thursday (18) and had been fined Rs. 35,000. According to Police, the 57-year-old monk resides in a temple in the Pangirihena area in Imaduwa. Before entering into priesthood in 2021, the monk has had previous charges against conducting illegal alcohol business, Police said.

During the raid that was carried out by the Imaduwa Police after receiving a tip-off from an informant, Police also seized 18,000 ml of illegal alcohol and equipment used to brew alcohol inside the room where the monk was staying.

The Police said that the monk has produced moonshine using a gas stove and the monk has said during questioning that he has brewed this illegal liquor for his personal use.
