The Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) set free 82 sea turtle hatchlings at the Panama beach on Sunday (16). Southeastern Naval Area Commander, Rear Admiral Thushara Karunathunga was there to witness the release of the hatchlings.

On the directive of SLN Commander, Vice Admiral Priyantha Perera, the SLN conducts a Turtle Conservation Project (TCP), towards saving these endangered marine species.

The TCP ensures the conservation of sea turtle eggs and the safe release of hatchlings into the ocean.

Apart from the SLN-managed TCP Centre in Panama, similar initiatives are being conducted along the Western, Southern and Eastern shorelines by the Sri Lanka Coast Guard.

The eggs of the released sea turtle hatchlings were conserved by the Turtle Conservation Unit at SLNS Mahanaga in the Southeastern Naval Command.
